Stupidity costs Tasmanian couple their home

    https://au.news.yahoo.com/a/36915384...p-for-auction/

They refused to pay rates (land tax) on the basis that the land belongs to God; So the local council auctioned off the property to recover the overdue amount. They owed about $3,500; The auction raised about $120,000, for a property with an estimated market value of $300,000. They get to keep the ~$116,500 difference.

They also refused to pay taxes on their nearby shop and cafe, but were bailed out by an anonymous donor when that was threatened with seizure earlier this year.

Jesus doesn't believe in ghosts. Possession isn't possible!

Their "argument" basically comes down to equivocation between paying taxes and "worshipping". A very feeble attempt at tax evasion.

Will the anonymous donor step up again next time they are in trouble for not paying their taxes? Probably not a good idea to depend on the kindness of strangers.

Worse, will they consider that anonymous donor to be the work of God?

Perhaps. I just wonder how long they'd be able to keep that up.

for all eternity. It is easy for them to employ an industrial-strength confirmation bias whereby everything positive is the work of a loving god and is evidence of HIS individual love for them, and everything negative is the work of Satan (or the Liberals, or the atheists, or the commie-jew-niggers, or whatever group or anthropomorphized force has been demonized among their tribe).

Where are the climate-change deniers during all these hurricanes? Right, they're waiting for the blizzards to start so they can say, "snow is proof of no global warming".

They should give the $116,500 to their God. Being consistent is a fundamental virtue for tax cheats.
