Tell an offensive joke, go to jail

The UK has just set a precedent by convicting a man of a jailable hate-crime for posting a video of a comedy bit where he secretly trained his girlfriend's dog to give a Nazi salute when asked "Do you want to gas the Jews?"
Part of the bit included showing the dog seemingly intently watching footage of Hitler rallies.

To avoid red-herrings about this particular guy's political views, they have no relevance to the case.
The judge said that it is irrelevant whether the expression was sincere or if it was done for comedic effect. The ruling was based on the mere fact that was likely to be offensive to some Jews made it a crime for which he now faces possible jail time (he already spent a night in jail when first arrested for it).

It sounds like he was making fun of Nazis. Doesn't that mean putting him in jail is a good thing because he is guilty of "white genocide"?

Bit of a stretch to say it's comedy but still, glad to see that the Scottish police have cured sectarian bigotry and moved on to target that scourge erm, nazi puggs.

Between Mr. Hilter and Don't Mention the War, I am surprised John Cleese has not been thrown in jail.

The quality of the execution notwithstanding, he is clearly doing it to get a laugh, and the absurd concept of an adorable pug being a Nazi has rather classic comedic structure to it.

"Clearly doing it to get a laugh" ? From whom ? I think his motives are debatable but not important. The fact he was charged, tried and convicted for it is terrifying.

So, you think he was trying to convince people that his girlfriends dog was an actual Nazi? Because the only alternative is that it was intended as a comedic juxtaposition of how cute pugs are with the idea that one would hold such a rePUGnant ideology.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I am not going to dwell on the reasons why he did it other than if it's comedy, it's too high brow for my tastes. I'd rather focus on the real nazis in the Scottish law.

Religious conservatives shouldn't be able to make laws like this. That's crazy. What's even crazier is that guy's earrings. That deserves an arrest.
