Alabama Votes for Ten Commandments Displays

    https://www.al.com/politics/2018/11/...g-passage.html

A meaningless constitutional amendment perhaps given the current state of First Amendment jurisprudence, but note this quote from its advocate:

"The people we were hearing from are super excited to have this opportunity to go down in history as the first state to acknowledged that we want God, that is the Christian God, in their Constitution,” said Dean Young, the chief advocate for the amendment.

But hey we’re not trying to mix church and state.

I'm starting to think that the Civil War was a mistake. You should have thrown that thing and let all these shithole states leave.

I've made that same observation many times.

The good news is, there is plenty of evidence, like the statements above, that this is a blatant violation of the 1st amendment and current jurisprudence.

The bad news is, the current make up of the SCOTUS might not care.

Except, y'know, the whole slavery thing.
Do human beings have free will? I can't decide.

How can you just not see the problems this presents? What happens in Utah? Did they ever think of that? It is so simple to separate church and state, so hard to allow for all religions if you don't.

Slavery would have imploded sooner rather than later anyway.

I doubt most of the people who voted for this could even quote you the commandments in question, let alone explain what they mean or how they relate to US law. This is the construction of an idol, nothing more or less. And as such an ironic violation of the very Torah they are fetishizing, which has a firm position on idolatry as it happens.

Could a Capitalist state actually exist, if it considered covetousness a punishable crime and (somehow) enforced it? I don't see how.

It would have expanded into Mexico... The south would have imported Mexicans for trade... which color slave is more lazy? the brown ones or the black ones? Product diversification... sell the black ones to Mexico and trade the brown ones to Africa for more black ones...
I guess the real question is would have Africa stopped the slave trade that they started. America was just another of their customers.
Funny how black people want to go back to Africa when it was that continent that started the global slave trade. I grew up being told that Americans "stole" the blacks from Africa and forced them into slavery. Not true. They were already enslaved by Africans and sold to countries all around the world.
So, without America making the change after the civil war, who knows how Africa's global trade of their own people would have gone.

I feel sorry for the people of Alabama who voted for this. They've fallen for a con yet again.

I don't feel sorry at all for those who voted for this. They voted to violate the establishment clause of the constitution and they voted to usurp government power to promote their religious beliefs while at the same time use the government to pronounce that beliefs that do not include the 10 commandments are wrong.

The people who voted for this are morally disgusting.

I only feel badly for those who voted against this.
