So -- with Red Garland, I know him mainly from his 50s work in Miles' band and on the sessions he led for Prestige. I like Red Garland's Piano a lot, also a session with Coltrane & Byrd on hand called All Mornin' Long (which consists of three long pieces, with some excellent blues blowing by the 2 horn men.) There are currently some album collections on CD by Red that compile a good handful of his old sessions at a bargain price.

Another thought -- anyone else listen to Erroll Garner? He's another savant like Art Tatum with a bubbly infectious style (and a strange but fetching mannerism of making percussive grunts as he plays.) If I'm right, he couldn't read music(?) but played from a complete familiarity with keys, chords, rhythms.

    Classical: Valentina Liszita

Pop: Regina Spektor, Ben Folds, or both simultaneously if possible.

    Jazz: Thelonius Monk

But really, I enjoy listening to anyone who really loves their instrument and knows how to play with it a little.
