The Nazis tried to kidnap the pope?

Is this for real? is this accurate? Is it based on anything that is accurate? Have any of you heard of this before?

Dunno, but I got a good chuckle when the narrator labeled the introduction of the Volkswagen as a crime against humanity... Thanks.

    ETA:
I did a quick search and found this article in the Guardian that could have been the source material for that video.

Hitler plot to kidnap the pope revealed

Weeks before Nazi troops abandoned Rome, Adolf Hitler personally ordered the SS to kidnap the then pope so he could be brought back to Germany and locked up in a castle, according to previously unpublished testimony made available at the weekend.
The newspaper Avvenire, which is owned by the Catholic church in Italy, suggested the kidnap plot was part of a wider plan to "abolish" Christianity and replace it with a religion in which Hitler would be worshipped as the saviour of humankind.

    ... snip ...
OTOH it could be that the Guardian used this video as the source for their article.

I also never heard of this one before.

And frankly, even if true, it would have less to do with some attempt to wipe out christianity and more the military habit of taking everything you can use before withdrawing. The Pope is certainly a useful thing.

It would have been cool if the Nazis had kidnapped the Pope and then the Allies responded by installing their own Pope and then both sides got them to fight each other to see who got to be the real Pope.

Stay tuned. Buddhism may see this happen over which Panchen Lama is the 'real' Panchen Lama when the current Dalai Lama dies. China kidnapped the Panchen Lama (a little kid at the time) so they could raise him - The Dalai Lama named a new one. The 'real' Panchen Lama is needed to recognize a new Dalai Lama.

I think the dispute should be settled by the two Lamas in a cage match.

Do the Lamas have magic powers where they can turn into animals and such? Not llamas, of course, but if one can turn into a wolf and the other can turn into a tiger or something, that would make for a really cool cage match and would significantly increase interest in their religion.

I've read that there was a plot to kidnap the pope but Hitler was advised not to by his people because of the negative blowback it would cause in countries not yet at war with Germany and that had large catholic populations.

It's accurate that SS General Karl Wolff said at the Nürenberg trials that he was told to, but refused. He said this in the hope that he would get a more lenient ruling. He was also one of the early Nazi turn coats who collaborated with the allies when it was obvious Germany was doomed. The guy was clearly an opportunist willing to say anything to save his skin.

But the last period of the Nazi Reich was quite messy. Who the fuck knows? And does it really matter?

BTW, "kidnap"? Wouldn't the correct term be... "arrest".
