Is it any more crazy than buying Alaska from Russia, or "Louisiana" from France, was?

Alaska was largely unexplored and considered by many (including the Russian Emperor) to be worth far less than the $7.2 million Seward and Johnson agreed to pay.

And the area sold by France in the Louisiana Purchase includes a very large fraction of the Trump voting, gun-toting, Bible-bashing, 'flyover country', without which your nation could be very modern and progressive (albeit separated into two discontinuous territories) - it's hardly obvious that it was a wise buy.

Perhaps the biggest issue here is that Denmark probably won't want to sell. But if the price is right...

And of course, if the Trump administration continues in its powerful support for the coal industry, they are setting up for Greenland to become a very valuable territory indeed - Who doesn't want a beachfront property on a nice warm island with vast areas of unclaimed farmland in the interior? You could move the population of Florida and the modern-day state of Louisiana there when those states are engulfed by the rising ocean.

He isn't the first president to try to buy Greenland. Truman made made an offer.

That well-known stable genius Harry Truman...

I imagine they are considering similar facts. Trump is, for whatever reason, preparing for a world war with no allies.

Why would we want to? It might have potential for mining rare earth elements which I think is currently limited to China and Afghanistan. Is there a military defense angle?

That, and the economic boom in the Arctic as the northwest passage opens for regular shipping. Good way to piss off our northern neighbors as well, as they would have an American state or territory in basically every direction. Ancient dominance symbol, surrounding your enemy physically. Normally this wouldn't be a good thing, but Trump and his buddies hate Canada and are happy when they're sad.

Goodness, it really does make one need to stretch the imagination, but I got something that’d work.

This is a classic opening tactic in bargaining and you've now just started haggling with The Great Negotiator (PBUH). You're now going to end up with your country sold for cents on the dollar and will then be spending the next ten years trying to get him on the phone so you can ask when he'll actually pay you.

It's your own damn fault for falling into such an obvious trap, though.
