The Malizia II is now due south of the southern end of Nova Scotia, and due east of Cape Cod. It has good tailwinds, and it should arrive in New York City tomorrow.

Sunday, Aug 25: Greta Thunberg is unfazed by stormy seas

Greta Thunberg on Twitter: "Day 12. We are getting closer to the North American mainland. Rough conditions, but downwind sailing. https://t.co/n9huwHUSGI" / Twitter
"It's very rough with very high waves," Thunberg said.

Amid a long seafaring journey surrounded by boundless waters and the formation of a tropical storm in the north Atlantic, Thunberg and her team have consistently reported undaunted spirits.

"So far they’re really enjoying the trip," Axel Hackbarth, an onshore member of the Boris Herrmann Racing team who is supporting the mission, told Mashable on Wednesday.

Today, the sailboat was nearing the US coast with strong downwinds.
Greta Thunberg on Twitter: "Day 13. Rough seas south of Nova Scotia. But conditions closer to New York will be slower than predicted and weather update suggests Wednesday arrival - an updated ETA will come as we near the coast. https://t.co/IY6L9InSnp" / Twitter

Checking the tracker, as I write this, the Malizia is a little bit south of the east end of Long Island.

Greta Thunberg sees land ahead as she approaches New York | Environment | The Guardian
She was offered a ride on the Malizia II racing yacht skippered by Pierre Casiraghi, the son of Princess Caroline of Monaco, and the German round-the-world sailor Boris Herrmann.

On Monday, the 16-year-old whose school strikes have inspired children across the world to protest against the climate crisis, tweeted that she expected to arrive in Manhattan on Tuesday.

She added late on Tuesday to say that the yacht was facing rough seas south of Nova Scotia and “conditions closer to New York will be slower than predicted”.
    Tuesday, Aug 27:
Greta Thunberg on Twitter: "Home Sweet Home since 14 days. Soon last evening onboard Malizia ll. Tomorrow we reach New York. https://t.co/f83Q3Km5hB" / Twitter
A picture of GT in the boat cabin. It's dark outside.

    Wednesday, Aug 28:
Greta Thunberg on Twitter: "Land!! The lights of Long Island and New York City ahead. https://t.co/OtDyQOWtF5" / Twitter
The boat's rigging is illuminated by the green starboard (right-side) light, and NYC and LI lights are in the distance. It's still dark.

It's hard to liveblog, so I'll leave off here. It is 3:44 am PDT, 6:44 am EDT, and the Malizia is in the upper end of Lower New York Bay, just before going into The Narrows.

The Malizia II has entered Upper New York Bay, and it is now east of Bayonne NJ. The sky is overcast, and the wind strong enough to noticeably tilt the boat, by some 10 - 20 degrees.

We now see the Statue of Liberty up ahead.

Haven't seen this much attention for a kid on a boat since Elian.

I watched the final few hours of the trip. The Malizia passed the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Governors Island. It got rather close to the latter island. It was hard to see how much progress the Malizia was making, because in the livestream seemed like it was done with a camera with a telephoto lens. It kept going north until I saw its crew furl the sails - let them drop. Then some boats pushed against it and I got confused as to what was going on. Then I saw the Malizia going through a small inlet - the inlet to North Cove. It was soon parked in its berth, and the people aboard the Malizia got out of it. Greta Thunberg did a short press conference.

Greta Thunberg on Twitter: "The @UN has sent out one boat for each of the 17 sustainable development goal to greet us! Thank you! https://t.co/AU5ZSVj5vD" / Twitter
