    Idea for a firefox addon

An addon that goes through a webpage and replaces every occurrence of a given word or words with some other word or phrase.

    For example:
    Diptera: Two-wings
    Quetzalcoatl: feathered-serpent
    Tibia: shinbone
    star·board: right-side
    Anterior: front
    SAM: Surface-to-Air missile
    etc...

It would need a very large dictionary
There is no such thing as moral or immoral behavior. Only civilized and uncivilized behavior. Civilized laws are laws that do not give any one person or any one group of people any special rights above what all others have. The more a society treats everyone as equals the more civilized it is.

It would also need to understand the context of a word.
    • "SAM" is not always "Surface-to-Air Missile"
    • acronyms should not be expanded except when first mentioned
    • starboard is only right-side if you're facing towards the front of the ship
    • Quetzalcoatl is a proper noun which should never be translated to "feathered serpent"
    • "Anterior" should not be used instead of "front" when talking about anatomy.

To make this work, you'd need a full blown language translation engine which translates English to "Simple English".

IMO this wouldn't be useful even if it could be built.

Also, Ambrose Bierce insisted that there are no synonyms, as every word chosen has not only a meaning, but a degree of meaning , so that the exact message can be lost by a translation.

Like when i could not remember a word to save my life and sent my son to get the taco-ketchup. He looked at me for a second, 'you mean salsa?'
One us a term describing a condiment, one is a symptom supporting a few diagnoses.

Rather than a translation, maybe you should try for footnotes, or in-line hypertexting. That way people who have understood the difference between port and starboard since McHale's Navy can read uninterrupted, while the option is available for anyone who needs amplifying information. Thus, the ampldata could be of any size necessary to convey an adequate understanding. As pointed out, starboard does not equal right side in all uses.

And no. Just no. A translation would not be to shoot down the Seattle Art Museum. It would be a claim that the Soviets shot down Korean Airlines Flight 902 by launching a Seattle Art Museum.

    That would require a BFC.

If you're going to be pedantic about it--it was shot down by the American Association of Museums.

Its been tried before, with disappointing and sometimes amusing results. As others have pointed out, context is key. A Christian nutter website tried this with their incoming news feed a few years ago:

The American Family Association obviously didn't foresee the problems that might arise with its strict policy to always replace the word "gay" with "homosexual" on the Web site of its Christian news outlet, OneNewsNow. The group's automated system for changing the forbidden word wound up publishing a story about a world-class sprinter named "Tyson Homosexual" who qualified this week for the Beijing Olympics.
