Thanks - no youtube. Dialup speeds.
It bugs me when something that should be ridiculously easy is not working!

Sometimes these things are temporarily disabled due to updates / bugs etc. If it's Google Docs it *should* be easy, if it's not there might be something unusual going on.

Also is it possible you're doing something like highlighting multiple files, which is hiding the open button?

    View & open files

With Google Drive on the web, you can view things like videos, PDFs, Microsoft Office files, audio files, and photos.

    View a file

    1. Go to drive.google.com.
    2. Log into your Google account with your username and password.

    3. Double-click a file.
    4. If you open a Google Doc, Sheet, Slides presentation, Form, or Drawing, it will open using that application.
    5. If you open a video, PDF, Microsoft Office file, audio file, or photo, it will open in Google Drive.

    -----

This seems simple. If your system is not doing it, then as others have suggested, there might be problems.

Perhaps Google Docs was down last time you tried?

That's probably your problem. Google Docs downloads some pretty big stuff. Something critical is probably getting a timeout. Cloud based solutions don't like dial-up.

Can you download the file perhaps and then open it with something on your own machine?

    Thanks for the suggestions.
    - not highlighting multiple
    - download option does nothing
    - double click does nothing
    - if google docs is down, it sure looks up

She finally came home from school. She had a visitor link in a prior e-mail and tried opening in that, and it worked in a different window.
Why did that work? Who knows.

Probably the slow speed, I guess.
Jesus. What a bitch that was.
No, do NOT send me something in google docs. Send me a fucking e-mail, please. Your google docs is showing its privilege.

Google Docs doesn't work unless it can talk to the server constantly. If you have a slow connection it is probably just unable to work. It won't tell you so; it will just become completely unresponsive while it waits for HTTP requests to make the round trip from your computer, to Google's server, and back again. The app's designers failed to properly handle slow connections.

Probably because the URL told the server "just give me this document", which doesn't require any back-and-forth.

I would guess that these visitor links (that let anyone with the link view the doc) will always work for you, which might come in handy in the future when someone else inevitably sends you a Google doc.

I'd be willing to try to troubleshoot it myself, but I have broadband, and Rhea may not want to make that document accessible to me if it's some personal stuff or some stuff internal to some organization.
