Angry "Great Mother" acceptable but no deity isn't - recent House-opening prayer

NowThis on Twitter: "‘I am honored to have a fierce woman from my district to deliver an historic opening prayer.’ — @RepDebHaaland introduced the first Native American to ever lead an opening prayer on the House floor https://t.co/h88EgAkPcY" / Twitter
Isleta woman makes history by being first Native woman to lead U.S. House prayer | KOB 4
User Clip: House Prayer by Verna Teller | C-SPAN.org
    The text of that prayer:

O Creator and Great Mother, having asked and received your permission to invoke your blessings today to all directions, to the east, north, west, south and the center we thank you for the life you give to all your children, the two legged ones, the four legged, those who live in the waters and those who watch over us from the skies above. Sacred pollen, sacred earth mother, sacred water that man fests your desires, o Creator and Great Mother, we thank them for the nourishment they give us equally with no regard to race, color, or creed. Creator and Great Mother, bless those standing before you who carry a sacred trust to all of us who inhabit Turtle Island, our homeland, and i pray today that you will give them the wisdom and the courage to carry out their sacred trust with the same equality that we receive from the sun and rain. Thank you.

Seems like anything goes as long as you call it religion.

The more orthodox and strict Abrahamic sects are united in maintaining that the Creator and Ruler of the Universe is male. Thus, a female big deity is gross heresy.

Court upholds rule that House open each day it is in session with prayer | National Catholic Reporter - seems like the court was weaseling out of its duty.

The House has had various guest chaplains over the years - Xian, Jewish, Muslim, and Hindu.

Venkatachalapathi Samuldrala prayer controversy - on 2000 Sep 14, he started the day's House session with this prayer:

O God, You are Omnipresent, Omnipotent, and Omniscient. You are in everything and nothing is beyond You. You are our Mother and Father and we are all Your children. Whatever You do is for our good. You are the ocean of mercy and You forgive our errors. You are our teacher and You guide us into righteousness.

Today, in this great Hall, are assembled the elected Representatives of the people of the Nation. They are ready to perform their duties. God, please guide them in their thoughts and actions so they can achieve the greatest good of all.

We end this invocation with a prayer from the ancient scriptures of India:
    May all be happy
May all be free from disease
May all realize what is good
May none be subject to misery
Peace, peace, peace be unto all

The Religious Right had a cow over that.

Rajan Zed prayer protest - on 2007 Jul 20, he started the day's Senate session with this prayer:

May we meditate on the transcendental glory of the Deity Supreme, who is inside the heart of the Earth, inside the life of the sky and inside the soul of the heaven. May He stimulate and illuminate our minds. Lead us from the unreal to real, from darkness to light, and from death to immortality. May we be protected together. May we be nourished together. May we work together with great vigor. May our study be enlightening. May no obstacle arise between us. May the Senators strive constantly to serve the welfare of the world, performing their duties with the welfare of others always in mind, because by devotion to selfless work one attains the supreme goal of life. May they work carefully and wisely, guided by compassion, and without thought for themselves. United your resolve, united your hearts, may your spirits be at one, that you may long dwell in unity and concord. Peace, peace, peace be unto all.

Also Protesters Disrupt Hindu Prayer In Senate - CBS News, Apologetics Press - Hindu Prayer in Congress. The Religious Right foamed at the mouth over this prayer also.

That Apologetics Press article objected to the pantheism in this prayer - it was in the previous post's prayer also.

Perhaps we need a new word to explain and pacify all this infantile silliness. I submit Prayor. The Prayor is whatever or whomever the prayer is directed toward by the prayee or prayees. It's generic and neuter so we can use it in all cases. Even atheists can call upon their prayor because it can be anything.

The point of all this prayer stupidity anyway is to undertake a group hug that enables the common good. Some people are so insecure that they require regular group hugs, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I think legislative bodies should just imitate barnyard animals for 45 seconds. It would satisfy the need for communal intoning, and it would be entertaining. It might get them in the mood to debate agricultural policy, too. Also less divisive, unless you had Hindu members who didn't want cows to be mocked. In which case you could limit the animals to, say, ducks, goats, and horses. That's called legislative compromise. Also I would love to hear Mitch McConnell's take on a constipated goat.

Or pigs. In honor of pork barrel. Though pigs are a no-no animal in Judaism and Islam.

Freethought Matters TV Show - YouTube - had some Congresspeople on in: Jared Huffman, Jamie Raskin, and Mark Pocan. One of them described his struggles to have a secular invocation. He noted that most Congresspeople aren't around for those opening prayers.

BTW, I found this "Creator and Great Mother" invocation when looking through Rep. Ilhan Omar's Twitter feed for something else.

Why cant ppl pray on govt property?
Are Muslim prayer rooms at US govt owned airports a problem for atheists?
The Orlando airport spent $350,000 on their Muslim prayer room.

People can pray all they want on their own initiative. It's official prayers that are the problem.

Would you like something like "God, I beg of you, strike with lightning every member of every other party"?

I am a Hindu (though an atheist Hindu). I have no problem about any animal including cows, pigs, cats, dogs and horses. No reason to exclude any if you eat another. Dogs meat is relished in our eastern-most state (Arunachal Pradesh). Banning cow-slaughter is un-economic. I do not believe in compromises.

    Prayer to the Mother Goddess:

    "Yā Devi sarva bhuteshu, shaktirupena samsthitā;
    Namastasyai, namastasyai, namastasyai namo namah"

    This goddess, who in all things, exists as the energy;
I bow to you, I bow to you, I bow to you, again and again."
