The Streisand Effect and Bovine Betrayal

In 2003, photographer Ken Adleman wanted people to know about the severity of erosion on the California coast. He took aerial photos of the coastline and put 12,000 of them on a website. Out of the 12K pics, one of them showed Barbara Streisand's house, high up on the cliff.

In the ordinary course of events, I would have no idea that Barbara's house was on the internet, but she sued the Adelman, demanding he remove pic 3850. In a month, the views of the went from six to about half a million. Streisand ended up having to pay Adelman's attorney's bills, but she has a house on a cliff in California, so she can afford it.

While it's generally conceded that it's a good thing to learn from your mistakes, it's certainly better to learn from someone else's mistakes. Which brings us to the strange case of the man who sued his cow.

Devin Nunes, the Congressman from California likes cows. His family has been in the cow business since the first Nunes left Portugal in the early 1900s. In that time, Nunes has managed to keep his Portuguese heritage mostly intact, and has only one non-Portuguese grandparent. That hasn't diluted his loyalty to his homeland a bit. He once tried to get the Pentagon to build a military base in the Azores, claiming everything is cheaper there. The Pentagon said, "No, everything costs more. We checked."

However, since Devin went to Washington, there has been some discontent among his cows. One of them has been talking behind his back. This cow went so far as to open a Twitter account and say some things about Devin that aren't very nice, even calling Devin a "treasonous cowpoke."

Devin was not going to take that kind of abuse from anyone, especially from someone with four nipples. He did what any hot blooded Portuguese boy would do, he sued. Devin has gone to court to discover which cow has an Iphone and is demanding $250 million dollars. Unlike most Congressmen, Nunes is not a lawyer. He has degrees in agriculture, so he knows a lot about cows, maybe no so much about suing them.

The Streisand Effect is the label given when somebody with money thinks they can go to court and force someone with less money to bend to their will. Barbara didn't want people to see a picture of her house on the internet, and when she sued, it was a public notice of where to find a picture of her house. She paid about $150K for that experience.

We can assume that prices have gone up, so Nunes is going to be on the hook for more than that. It's strange that a man with a Master's Degree in Agriculture would know better than to sue a cow, but that's probably something taught in law school.

And now, many people on the internet, when they see the name Devin Nunes laugh and go "Moooooooo!". At least I do.

Mr. Nunes is a hyper-partisan jackass with a penchant for suing those with whom he disagrees. He has yet to win one - (source:https://www.rollcall.com/news/hoh/it...es-to-lawsuits). It is possible that he is suing them with no intention of winning but forcing them to use resources up and to intimidate others.

    ...
Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) filed a defamation suit against CNN on Tuesday over a story reporting that the Republican congressman had traveled to Vienna to meet with foreign officials and discuss finding dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden.
The Washington Times first reported Tuesday that Nunes, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, had filed a $435 million lawsuit arguing that the network had defamed him by falsely reporting he had traveled to Vienna and met with a former Ukrainian prosecutor.
A review of the November story in question revealed that the CNN report stated that an attorney for an indicted associate of Rudy Giuliani, Lev Parnas, said at the time that his client would testify under oath that Nunes had made such a trip, with the attorney claiming that the former prosecutor himself had revealed Nunes's efforts. CNN's article did not independently verify or disprove the claims made by Parnas's attorney.

    Here we go again. Mooooooo!

As journalists and legal experts wade through the 17-plus pages of the executive summary and the 300 pages of the full House Intelligence Committee report released Tuesday afternoon, it’s increasingly clear the report is quite damning for the President – which we already knew – and for that committee’s Republican Ranking Member and former chairman, Devin Nunes, who is mentioned at least 48 times in the report.

Nunes or his aide, Derek Harvey made a lot of calls to Rudy Giuliani and Lev Parnas. Or received calls from these two. In short, Nunes may well be a part of this interconnected set of conspiracies. Mooooo to come.

That's exactly what this is, sometimes labeled a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, or SLAPP. I have to believe paying someone else's attorney to make it all go away will slow down this kind of bad behavior.

For every conceivable topic, the internet has porn
For every shitty inequity in the legal system, there is a John Oliver video:

In case you need more reasons to think Trump is a cunt, he's the fucking cheerleader of SLAPP suits.

    ...
A new ethics complaint was filed Wednesday against Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) after it was revealed he was coordinating with President Donald Trump’s attorney and recently indicted associates to garner “dirt” on former Vice President Joe Biden.
“The House Intelligence Committee’s Trump-Ukraine Impeachment Report dated December 3, 2019 used a subpoena to obtain phone records which plainly demonstrate that ranking member Devin Nunes (R-CA) has an actual conflict of interest with an ongoing impeachment hearing he oversees,” the filed complaint filed by The Democratic Coalition stated. “That is because Rep. Nunes is currently engaged in overseeing an investigation in which it appears he is a fact witness, and which may examine his own activities and meetings with agents and lawyers of the President who solicited foreign election assistance, as well as potentially into his own contacts with foreign government officials.”
    ....

Sinking in the swamp. Now the question, Can Nunes be expelled from The House Intelligence Committee for his questionable objectivity?

Protesters clad in full-body furry costumes sang about Rep. Devin Nunes during a Saturday protest at the White House.

The protesters were dressed as cattle after the Fresno Republican sued a fake cow Twitter, @DevinCow.

The protesters changed the lyrics to the hit 1958 Chuck Berry song “Johnny B. Goode” to “Devin Nunes.”

Video of the protested was posted to Twitter by Democratic strategist Parkhomenko, who was targeted by Nunes in one of his lawsuits.
