Hacked! - Parler, Conservative Alternative to Twitter

    What is Parler?

Conservatives Flock To Parler App, Claim Censorship On Facebook And Twitter : NPR
Maria Bartiromo, the Fox Business host, declared herself done with Twitter two days after the election.

She tweeted a link to an article that falsely claimed Democrats were trying to steal the election. Twitter hid the post behind a label warning that it contained misleading content. Twitter also notified Bartiromo that someone had complained about her account (even though it did clarify that she had not violated any rules and it was taking no action against her).

For Bartiromo, the label was the last straw.

"This is the same group who abused power in 2016," Bartiromo tweeted to her nearly 900,000 followers. "I will be leaving soon and going to Parler. Please open an account on @parler right away."
    What is Parler?
Parler, founded in 2018, touts itself as "the world's premier free speech platform." On Saturday, CEO and co-founder John Matze said one of the privately owned company's early investors is Rebekah Mercer, who along with her father, hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer, has been a backer of President Trump and is also a major donor to conservative causes, including Breitbart News and former White House strategist Steve Bannon.

"John and I started Parler to provide a neutral platform for free speech," Rebekah Mercer wrote on Parler on Saturday. She went on to condemn "the ever increasing tyranny and hubris of our tech overlords."

    From the NYT:
Over the weekend, Parler shot to the top of Apple’s App Store in downloads. As of Monday, it had eight million members, nearly double the 4.5 million it had last week. Rumble said it projected 75 million to 90 million people will watch a video on its site this month, up from 60.5 million last month. And Newsmax said more than 3 million people watched its election night coverage and that its app has recently been in the top-10 daily apps downloaded from Apple’s App Store.
Recently trending on Twitter is the hashtag #ParlerHacked along with #ParlerLeaks

This piqued my curiosity, and I found
OSINTtechnical on Twitter: "Effectively all the info on Parler got hacked. (disclaimer this doesn't actually contain any personal or hacked info it's just verification of the hack itself) https://t.co/vaVD7dn7e8" / Twitter

Brian Tyler Cohen on Twitter: "Congrats to everyone who moved to Parler, which has already been hacked. Turns out maybe you shouldn’t trust Dan Bongino to build a secure social network." / Twitter

Atanu Mukherjee, PhD/UF on Twitter: "@briantylercohen Word is that a tons of really really bad DMs were compromised & those were from prominent Republicans.

    I want some samples. 😋 #ParlerHacked #ParlerLeaks #Parler #Parleys" / Twitter

I wonder how many Republican officials posted there and whose posts will now be leaked. And yes, I want to see those hacked messages. Absolutely, WITH names.

Donald Trump was the fat line of coke conservatives snorted, thinking it would boost their energy and weight loss. Now they're waking up in a cheap motel room, picking at their scabs and denying that they have a problem.

Parler Cringe on Twitter: "Parler may have taken drivers licenses/last 4 ssn digits for some of their services, these #ParlerLeaks could be catastrophic. #ParlerHacked https://t.co/dnZN0T8CmR" / Twitter
with a screenshot of a display of some of Parler's terms of service with some commentary on them.
    • Item 9: "Parler may remove any content and terminate your access to the Services at any time and for any reason or no reason ... Parler is free to remove content and terminate your access to the Services even where the Guidelines have been followed."
    • Item 12: "You agree to arbitrate any dispute that you have with Parler."
    • Item 13: "You agree that you will not participate in a class action claim against Parler."
    • Item 14: You agree to defend and indemnify Parler ... from and against any and all claims, actions, damages, obligations, losses, liabilities, costs or debt. or and expenses (including but not limited to all attorneys fees) arising from or relating to your access to and use of the Services. Parler will have the right to conduct its own defense, at your expense, in any action or proceeding covered by this indemnity." This is unusual and very noteworthy (see more below). While consistent with a theme of freedom of expression and personal responsibility for your words, this is an item that all users should be explicitly aware of and should not only be found in a terms of service agreement that few read.
    • Item 17 basically says Parler can change all these terms at any time without notifying users.
    • Some services require a Social Security number to use (Item 6).
    • Parler requires a phone number to sign up. If you grant them access to your address book, Parler will store all that information and use it as they see fit.
    • All content posted on Parler is hidden behind its login wall.
    • You have to give Parler a picture of your driver's license and a selfie just to direct message people.
    • Pornography is banned: not just imagery, but written descriptions that they find to be lewd or explicit.

They relented on that last bit. So if Kimberly Guilfoyle, say, wants to show off nude pictures of herself, that might be OK. I think that they ought to have some spoiler warning for such content, however.

Parler's CEO denies that Parler was hacked.

Mark Dice on Twitter: "The disinformation campaign against Parler continues with false claims about #ParlerHacked. Here's a statement from CEO John Matze. https://t.co/4Ryn5EZ8gz" / Twitter
The alleged "Parler hack" is a screenshot from a WordPress website that has been circulated repeatedly over the past 6 months, despite Parler's multiple responses that we do not use WordPress products, nor WordPress databases. All of our databases are hidden behind multiple layers of security and are not accessible via the web. This is an irresponsible rumor which uses a "techie" looking WordPress config file which is only capable of confusing a journalistic hack, not an actual hacker. If Twitter continues to fact check others, they should also fact check posts such as these that spread viral misinformation.

Furthermore, we don't store any personal data, user verification data is deleted on completion, and direct messages cannot send videos/images. All allegations are fake. They are just obsessed with us.
Parler: new conservative 'free speech' social media app is banning liberal users

Ted Cruz on Twitter: "I’m proud to join @parler_app -- a platform gets what free speech is all about -- and I’m excited to be a part of it. Let’s speak. Let’s speak freely. And let’s end the Silicon Valley censorship. Follow me there @tedcruz! (link to some Ted Cruz video)" / Twitter

Tony Posnanski on Twitter: "I GOT BANNED FROM PARLER ..." / Twitter
    I GOT BANNED FROM PARLER 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 😂😂

Free speech my ass! I literally said less than here and I got banned 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. Fuck all that!

I got no reason. Just my account is unauthorized. No reason at all. That’s a riot!!!!!!

I thought the whole point was that free speech is allowed? Hahahahaha!!!!!!!! It’s literally a place for Nazis!
Respectable Lawyer on Twitter: "Pretty much all of my leftist friends joined Parler to screw with MAGA folks, and every last one of them was banned in less than 24 hours because conservatives truly love free speech." / Twitter

It pleases me that Ted Cruz is on Parler.

Well... except Nazis claiming "fake news" is actually a pretty reliable indication that it's true.

When conservatives realize they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will abandon democracy.

Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor but because we can't satisfy the rich.
